[Obit] Elder S.S. Barklow was born in Union County,Pa., July 27,1841, and died at his Norway, Coos county home, Dec.17,1897, aged 56 years, 4 months and 20 days. On June 13,1861, he was married to Mary Studebaker, and to them were born two sons, the younger, Dr. Jacob S. Barklow, died in this city June 1,1889. The elder son, Jas. Barklow being the present County School Superintendent of this county. Mrs. Mary Barklow died Mar.21,1866, Elder Barklow then emigrating to Iowa where in the latter part of the same year he married Annie Miller, to which union have been born seven children, all of whom are living. The Elder united with the German Baptist church at the age of 17 years, since which time he has lived a consistent, devoted Christian life, having spent 27 years laboring faithfully in the ministry of his church.
He first moved from his native state to Stevenson[sic] county,Ill, thence to Keokuk and Boone counties, Iowa, and finally reached his Western home in this county in the month of Aug,1872 where the family has since resided. For several years he has held the highest position within the gift of his church, which position he has held with the greatest dignity, honor and satisfaction. He was the last of three sturdy brothers who cast their lot in the Coquille valley; of the family, but one sister, Mrs. Moses Hixon, of this city, survives them. The Elder was widely known throughtout the country and of him it may be truthfully said that he knew no enemies. He was a kind and indulgent father, a loving husband, a good neighbor and withall a true, noble Christian gentleman. The funeral obsequies took place at Norway, Dec.19,1897, Rev.Geo. Carl conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Bonewitz. A great crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in the Norway cemetery. The bereaved family and friends have the sympathy and condolence of the ENTERPRISE and the entire community. (MPE-12/25/1897)
