John W. and Ruth M. Cain Impson, both 54, of 353 S. Yellow Springs St., in Springfield, went overboard when their 14-foot boat overturned in rough waters about 15 miles downriver from the Soo Locks, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Mr. Impson was the brother of Supt. Robert O. Impson of Cedarville.
Coast Guard investigators, whose rescue effort was hampered by high wind, were alerted when a passing ore freighter reported the couple clinging to the side of the boat. One had disappeared by the time rescuers arrived, and the other immediately after. Divers recovered both bodies by 10 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Mr. Impson was born in Champaign County and was an ex-pupil of the OSSO Home. He was a Navy veteran and a millwright at International Harvester, Springfield.
He is survived by his mother, Flossie Quick Impson; a daughter, Mrs. David (Darlene) Minnick of Springfield; two sisters, another brother and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Impson, an employe of the Thermometer Corp. of America in Springfield, is survived by her father, Jentry Cain of New Miami; three sisters, the daughter and grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Williams Funeral Home, 1330 E. High St., Springfield, Monday afternoon and evening, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. followed by burial for Mr. Impson at North Lewisburg.
Additional services for Mrs. Impson will be at Webb Funeral Home, Hamilton, Wednesday at 10 a.m., followed by interment in Hickory Flat Cemetery, Butler County.
