Kenneth Rodney Howell, our loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully from this mortal existence on October 6, 2009.

He was born January 25, 1929 to Edmund Sylvanus Howell and Hannah Lucinda Hurst in Fairview, Utah.

He married Yvonne Aiken of Spring City on March 15, 1950. They were sealed in the Manti Temple on September 7, 1950. They have enjoyed 59 years of marriage together. Ken was born in a small home at the mouth of Fairview Canyon and spent a blissful childhood with the mountain as his playground. He graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1947. He later attended Snow College and the University of Utah.

Ken joined the Utah National Guard in 1948. When his unit was called to duty he served in Texas, Oklahoma, and did a tour of duty in Korea. He worked hard and took advantage of the schooling the Guard offered. He excelled and advanced rapidly. When an opportunity was presented to serve in the Manti Unit, he accepted it believing Manti was a good place to raise a family.

In 1953, he moved his little family to Manti and has spent the last 56 years as an active member of the community. When he retired from the Utah National Guard he held the rank of a Chief Warrant Officer. Ken had a very positive influence over many young men in Manti and surrounding communities. Ken was looked upon as a leader in his work, the community, and in the church.

He was instrumental in starting the Bantam Basketball program, he was the commander of the local American Legion Post, the president of the Manti Jaycees, and a volunteer fireman. He served as a counselor in two different bishoprics prior to serving as a bishop. He served on the stake high council and in the Manti Temple. Dad was known by many different titles, but mostly he was known as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survived by his wife, Yvonne Howell, Manti; and children, Greg (Andrea) Howell, Deborah (Michael) Mangum, Cynthia (Matt) Thalman, Kerri (Mark) Rawlins, Kathy (Max) Anderson, Loraine Mitchell and Blake (Jennifer) Howell; sisters Zada (Rex) Norman, Bertha (Lloyd) Brady; 36 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; sisters: Reola Barney, Neva (Mar) Dye; brothers: Berthell (Janiel) Howell and Demont (Arlea) Howell; son-in-law Michael Mangum.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 12:00 Noon in the Manti Stake Center. Friends may call at the Stake Center in Manti on Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
