"MAN IS FOUND DEAD IN HOTEL
William Menefee's Passing Attributed To Natural Causes
The body of William Menefee, 60 years old, was found shortly after 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in his living quarters on the third floor of the Monroe hotel. Marshall Morris, country coroner, said he had been dead several days and had died of natural causes.
Mr. Menefee had been a resident here for 10 years. He was born Mar. 9, 1881, at Kaw city, Okla., and spent most of his life at Alva. He was an auctioneer.
Heart Attack Victim?
The body was discovered by Mrs. Winnie Barker, 201 South Eight street, and Frank Wright, manager of the hotel, according to police.
Apparently a victim of heart attack, Mr. Menefee was found lying on the floor of his bedroom. He was on his left side and his arms were folded under his head. Police and the coroner reasoned that he had just gotten up and started to dress when he suffered the attack.
Last Seen Saturday
A small gas stove was burning in the quarters and there was evidence that he had slept in the bed. There was money in his pockets. Mr. Menefee was last seen Saturday night, according to Morris. Morris added that he probably died Sunday morning.
Surviving are: a brother, Paul, of Alva; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Berry, Alva; an aunt, Mrs. Nettle Whitehead, of Arkansas City. Funeral arrangements are pending word from relatives. The Marshall Morris Funeral Home is in charge."

------------------------
Note: My mother, R. Jean Butka, his wife's granddaughter, doesn't remember ever meeting him and she was born in 1927, but she recalls he was the love of Lucy's life (her grandmother, who spoke fondly of their time together as the happiest in her life).
She also remembers hearing that he was younger than Lucy.
Thought he was a preacher and [knew] Lucy really loved him.
She thought he must have died before then, or surely before 1930.
He does not appear with Lucy in the 1930 census when she is residing with a cousin. However, it turns out they divorced according to his 1930 Census.
Lucy claimed that William C. Menefee died in an automobile accident sometime in the 1920-1930s [1942], probably in Oklahoma and maybe in Woods County. (Family Source). Note: This may just be "Nana's" story because she didn't want to talk about anything bad like a divorce she didn't want and it helped ease any stigma.
It turned out he died of a heart attack at home 5 Mar 1942. (Obituary).

1940 U. S. Federal Census: [Can't find?]
[Not enumerated in Winfield, KS or Arkansas City, KS - should be in the latter]

(Obituary).
