DURHAM -- Gladys Gornto Pickard Patterson Baker, age 96, resident of Durham, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Britthaven of Chapel Hill. Born in Onslow County on December 23, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Jacob R. Gornto and Della Raynor Gornto.
Gladys was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and in 2009 she received a life time of service award from the Women's Missionary Union, also she participated with helping youth at church. She was a retired employee of Duke University Hospital having worked there for over 27 years as the assistant director of housekeeping.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Mildred Gornto of Durham; and several loving nieces and nephews; and step-children and step-grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husbands, Lindo Pickard, Pat Patterson, and Almond Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with The Rev. Ed Johnson presiding. Burial will follow in Mt Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 545 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27707.
