Like all of his brothers and his father, Clifton was a railroader. He moved to Illinois in the late 1920's and married Arabelle Butts Sadler about 1928. After Belle's death on 22 May 1950, he married Gladine Navda Stroud Harper. They lived in Granite City, Illinois, for many years.
