He was the son of Robert Hickman Hodge Sr. and Mary Ann Mebane. He was born either on November 1st or 14th, depending on the source cited; the grave marker cites the 1st. He married Meliscent Bethany Hall in 1830 at the old home of Governor Runnells near Jackson, Mississippi; the bride was the Governor's niece. Robert & Bethany, as she went by, had 13 children. Robert married second to Mrs. Lizzie Richardson after the death of his first wife. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian clergyman and belonged to the Bacon Presbytery. He had only a common school education, but was a student of both books and men and began preaching when he was about 25 years old. He was first an itinerant preacher in Anderson County, Texas, having moved there from Mississippi. Two years later, he moved to Henderson County, Texas, buying a farm in the Science Hill locality, where at the time the best schools in the county existed. Robert was a Trustee of those schools during the remainder of his life. He organized the first Presbyterian churches at Concord and Brushy Creek, both in Anderson County, Texas. He also organized the first Presbyterian churches at Fincastle and Athens, both in Henderson County, Texas.
