Charles Foulks, one of the early pioneers of St. Clair County (IL), died at the home of his daughter in St. Louis, last Friday at the age of 88 years. He was a native of Monmouth County, NJ., but came with his parents, Christopher and Margaret Foulks to this county in the year 1817.
The subject of this sketch was one of a family of nine children. He was twice married. His first wife was Emily, the daughter of James Adams, and unto them were born seven children. His second marriage united him with Mrs. Mary E. Smith and they became the parents of eight children.
In 1828, he located on a farm of 150 acres near Belleville which he soon afterwards sold and then he entered 83 acres near Freeburg where resided for a period of 52 years. At one time his landed possessions amounted to 300 acres near Freeburg.
Retiring from farm life he erected a hotel at Freeburg which he managed for three years when he removed to Belleville. He resided in this city until 1887 when he went to St. Louis to make his home with his children and where he has since resided.
