J.W. BRUMMETT ANSWERS SUMMONS

John Wesley Brummett, who settled on a farm and ranch in the Percival community over in northern Hamilton county sixty years ago, passed away at the old family home on Friday evening, April 6, at 7:45 o'clock, aged ninety years and two months.

Mr. Brummett, rated as one of the wealthiest and most influential citizens of the county, remarkable for his splendid activity and mentality at so an advanced an age, suffered a stoke of paralysis on Tuesday and did not recover consciousness. His children except one son, and a number of his grandchildren and step- children were at his bedside when the end came, and remained for the funeral, held on Saturday afternoon.

In the old home, the walls in a part of which had stood for sixty years, peopled, it seemed, with the spirits of those who had lived under its sheltering roof, funeral rites for Mr. Brummett were held at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon Saturday. Rev. Ozro Newton, of the Church of Christ, conducted the services. Interment was made in the Brummett cemetery, where a grave was made for him amongst those other loved ones who bade him good-bye in the years passed. The mound was covered with beautiful flowers, fashioned into artistic floral pieces.

Grandson were given the honor of bearing the body to the grave. Those performing this sad task were Woodward, Garfield, J.C., Henry, Grady and C.Y. Brummett, Travis Massingill and Coleman Willingham.

Flower girls were Misses Margarite and Wynell Blacklock, Geraldine Rowe, Doris Allison, Vance Blakeley, and Mrs. Hershel Richerson.

In the mere outline the life of John Wesley Brummett reads like a romance from the pages of pioneer history of the state. He was born in the state of Illinois on January 8, 1845. His parents came to Texas when John Wesley was a small child, and he was reared in Jack County. He was married in that section of Texas in 1871 to Miss Mary Hensley. The young couple came to Hamilton county in 1874, and settled on the farm and ranch where they resided the balance of their lives.

Mr. Brummett was the father of nineteen children, eighteen of whom were born in his union with Mrs. Mary Hensley Brummett. After her death, he was married to Mrs. Mary Owen and to their union, a son, Lincoln Brummett of St. Francisville, Louisiana. Five step-children grew up in his home and loved him as an own father. His descendents number 114 grandchildren and 103 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mary Owen Brummett was gathered home with the saints on April 1, 1934, making her departure twelve months and four days preceeding her husband.

Besides the son named above the eleven surviving sons and daughters of J.W. Brummett are Ed Brummett, Enid, Okla.; H.R. Brummett, Fairy; Mrs. Elza Doty, Jesse Brummett, Charley Brummett, and Mrs. Clara Massingill, all of Big Spring, Texas; Will Brummett, Gasoline, Texas; Mrs. C.F. Herrin and E.Z. Brummett, Fairy; Mrs. Elsie Wetterman, Corpus Christi, and John Brummett, whose residence at present is not known to the family. The step-children reared by Mr. Brummett are Mrs. C.A. Puckett, Batton Rouge, La.; Mrs. Jesse Brummett, Big Spring; Mrs. W.B. Tumblin, Overton; Charley Owen, Gatesville, Dock Owen, Waco.

John Wesley Brummett identified himself with the Kingdom of God in 1885, when he united with the Church of Christ at Fairy, and walked in the faith steadfastly until translated to the new Kingdom, where life, full and joyous has no end.

The bereaved loved ones are offered the tenderest sympathy of a legion of friends.

Amongst the members of the family who were present for the funeral were Mrs. Belle Brummett and children, Vernon, Texas; Mrs. Betty Brummett and children, Gasoline, Texas.
