Donald Leroy Brixius

DALLAS - Donald Leroy Brixius, 87, a resident of Dallas died Saturday, October 3, 2009. He was born on March 24, 1922 in Grant, Nebraska the son of Nick and Emma Moeller Brixius. He graduated from Grant High School in 1939 and one year later enlisted in the Army Air Corp as a Cadet. He served for five years to include one year in Morocco in the Quarter Master Division. Don dated a young lady by the name of Lavina Friesen in high school and on April 3, 1942 they were married in Walla Walla, Washington, while he continued to serve in the military. He had a cousin who was a watchmaker and so encouraged him in the business. He is a graduate of the American Academy of Horology of Denver, Colorado. They moved to Ordway, Colorado where they owned a shop for 13 years. In 1959, they moved to Dallas and purchased the Sjolund Jewelry Store. Brixius Jewelers is the oldest continuously run jewelry store in Oregon, at 100 years. The Brixius' family will celebrate 50 years in Dallas in November of this year. Don continued his education by going to diamond grading school, stone setting and jewelry repair seminars. Don was the president of the Watchmakers Board in 1980. He was a member of the Dallas Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW and Lion's Clubs in Colorado and the Rotary Club in Dallas. He enjoyed his annual River Trip on the Willamette River and also getting out for a round of golf. He enjoyed the Oregon Coast and a good game of 21. Don and Lavina enjoyed traveling to many of the jeweler's conventions including Hawaii, Mexico and Alaska. They enjoyed traveling leisurely to Spain and the Caribbean and wintering in Tucson, Arizona and San Diego. He is survived by his wife Lavina of Dallas, sons Lyndal of Wilsonville and Robert of Dallas along with three grandchildren Michael Brixius of Springfield, Steven Brixius and Stephanie Looney both of Albany along with four great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Helen Hawkins of Syracuse, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by a son Terrell in 2007 and brothers Earl and Cecil. Viewing will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday, October 7th in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Thursday, October 8th in the mortuary with military honors. Private family interment will be in the Dallas Cemetery. Memorials contributions are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Building fund in care of the mortuary at 287 SW Washington St. Dallas, Oregon 97338.
