Harold Hugh Merritt passed away at his home in Lewiston, Utah on March 22, 2005. He was born on June 23, 1921, in Atchison, Kansas to Arch and Anna Merritt. He was the 2nd of four children.
The family moved to Clarks, Nebraska, where Harold attended a one room school house until the 8th grade he graduated from school in Clarks, Nebraska. As a youth he worked on neighbors farms and helped his father who was a mechanic.
In 1940 he moved to California, to accept a job with Lockheed Aircraft Company. He served in the Air Corp during W.W.II and was honorably discharged in December 1947. He returned to California and worked in the aerospace industry. He joined the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in May 1951, he married Mildred Yvonne Coltrin on September 1st 1951. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles temple on July 26, 1956.
They were the parents of 12 children (seven boys and five girls) and were married for 52 yrs. The couple made their first home in Lakewood, California and later moved to Anaheim, California. During that time Harold worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. In 1968 the family moved to Hyrum Utah, where he worked for Utah State University, in the water research lab and eventually transferred to the aerospace dept.
After retiring from the University he went to work for Globesat, which later became Final Analysis Inc. where he worked until his death. During his career the family also had lived in Downy, Idaho and finally ended up in Lewiston, Utah. As an active member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served in many bishoprics, he was executive Secretary for a number of bishops, ward clerk, scoutmaster, he has been involved in scouting for over 50 years, Sunday school teacher, genealogy, teacher, and home teacher.
He was currently serving as High Priest Group leader until March 12, 2005. He was a loving and devoted husband to Yvonne, his wife and sweetheart. Who passed from this life on October 29, 2003. He lovingly became her care giver when later in life she became confined to a wheelchair, he also took care of their down syndrome son Scott. As a father he was exemplary. He has 28 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. His greatest joy was found in his family.
Survivors include sons, and daughters as follows: Cynthia (John) Schroeder of Pleasant Hill, Cal.; Harold Merritt Jr. (Connie) of Blackfoot, Idaho; Jan Merritt of Logan Utah; Linda Marlin (Jerry) of Green River Wyo.; James (Lisa) Merritt of North Logan Utah; Steven Merritt of Edgewater, Md.; Joann Merritt of Trenton, Utah; Yvette Bair of Kemmerer, Wyo; David (Sheri) Merritt of Montpelier, Id.; Jerry (Chris) Merritt of Farmington, Utah and Scott Merritt of Lewiston, Utah. One sister Shirley Ann (Ernst) Hall of Fairmont, Neb. and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Max Henry Merritt, one sister Florence Frances Mae Kotch, one son Michael Merritt and his Sweetheart, his wife Yvonne Merritt.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Monday, March 28, 2005 in the Lewiston 1st Ward Chapel, 10 South 1600 West, Lewiston. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan and at the Church on Monday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services.
