He was born on Aug. 25, 1917, in Spokane. He grew up with four sisters and two brothers. After graduating high school he joined the U.S. Army.
Throughout his life he was always proud of his time in the service. It was said he had a love for square dancing, and he looked for any chance to travel and experience a new adventure.
He is survived by his three sons, Carl Ils, James Ils and Don Ils and his sister Allie Benzel and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
