Mrs J. C. Abbott
It is with sincere regret we have to record the death of Mrs J. C. Abbott, wife of the Rev J. C. Abbott, Vicar of St Peter's Anglican Church, Terrace End, which took place on Saturday morning.
The deceased lady, who had resided in Shannon for four years prior to removing to Palmerston North, was held in the highest esteem by the parishioners and towns-people, having by her charming disposition, endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact. The deepest sympathy will be felt throughout the district for the Rev Mr Abbott in the loss he has sustained.
Mrs Abbott had indifferent health during the past few years and for the major part of the 18 months which she had spent in Palmerston North was virtually an invalid, a circumstance which had prevented her taking as large a share in the affairs of the parish as she dearly desired. It is all the more to be regretted that her death should have occurred at a comparatively early age, deceased, whose maiden name was Miss May Barlow, having been born in Wellington 47 years ago. At the time of her marriage to Mr Abbott, Mrs Abbott was the widow of the late Mr Horatio Hall, of Nelson, who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War at Passchendaele in 1917.
Prior to her second marriage the deceased lady was a popular figure in Anglican Church work at Raetihi and at Martinborough, in the Wairarapa and had also resided for short periods at Sydney and Nelson. Mrs Abbott, while in Shannon, took an active interest in Sunday School work, which she continued at Terrace End and until her health forbade it, was prominently associated with the St Peter's ladies' Guild and other parish organisations in the latter place.
Three sisters, Mrs Ford, wife of Captain Ford, of the Featherson Military Camp permanent staff, Mrs Compton of Auckland and Mrs Laurenson, of Palmerston North, survive Mrs Abbott. Mrs Laurenson having for some time past resided at the Terrace End Vicarage.
The funeral took place at Palmerston North yesterday morning, when there was a large attendance including the vicars of the Church of England parishes in the district, clergy of the other denominations in Palmerston North and parishioners of St Peter's, All Saints and Shannon parishes. The burial service was conducted by Canon F. H. Petrie (Feilding) and the Rev G. W. Dent at the impressive funeral service held in St Peter's church. The service was choral and appropriate psalms and hymns were sung.
The bearers were Messrs R. H. F. Grace, N. H. Nash, W. W. Coutts, S. W. Rapley, H. Ashworth, E. R. B. Holben and E. Butt (Shannon). Many beautiful floral tributes and messages of sympathy were received by Mr Abbott.
