LD Austin of Eagar died of Sept. 29, 2009. He was nearly 98 years of age. He was born Dec. 12, 1911, in the small town of Afton, Dickens County, Texas.

He lived in Texas with his father, three brothers and two sisters during the hardships of the depression, picking cotton and building dirt tanks for as little as $1 a day.
He came to Arizona in 1935, where he found the love of his life, Georgia Mary Gillespie in Vernon. They were married and enjoyed 67 years together before Georgia's passing in 2003.
Together they endured many hardships in the early years of their life together, living in a canvas tent with a dirt floor, having to knock snow off the top with a broom in winter and trading husked corn for canned goods from the trading post.
LD was known for his love of life, family and friends. He enjoyed music, singing, playing the violin and guitar in a band, writing, singing and playing his own songs and enjoyed participating with his children and grandchildren's activities.
He also enjoyed being on the Mountain hunting and fishing and would share a personal experience for every turn in the road and at every lake and stream.
He was a painting contractor for 53 years and still held his license until his passing. He painted many homes, churches, businesses and an occasional barn or outhouse.
LD was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different capacities. His last calling was curator for the Cushman Museum in Springerville, where he has been serving for 29 years.
He was featured on behalf of the museum on Arizona Highways on Channel 12. People from all walks of life came to listen to him speak about the antiques and history of the items there.
Even through LD's later years he stayed active, serving his family, painting, hunting, fishing and working in his garden. Everyone that came in contact and knew him loved him and his fantastic sense of humor. He is the epitome of enduring to the end.
He is survived by sons Boyd (Joy) Austin, Gary (Edith) Austin and Danny (Judy) Austin, daughter Nona (LaVerl) Ashcroft, son-in-law Bob Bigelow; daughters-in-law Francie Austin and Karen Austin; 37 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Georgia Mary Austin; sons Norvell Eugene Austin and Terry Austin; and daughters Glenna Bigelow and Kimberly Austin.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 5, at the Eagar LDS Stake Center with a visitation one hour prior.
Burnham Mortuary of Eagar handled arrangements. To send condolences to the family, visit burnhammortuary.com.
