"Oliver Hawkins Ragland of Laclede County, Missouri, second son and fourth child of Silas Hawkins and Emily F. (Christian) Ragland, was born in Laclede County, Missouri on 23 April 1860. Taken as an infant to Washington County, Illinois by his parents, he would not return to Laclede County until 1867. Growing to manhood on the farm of his widowed mother.

Oliver Hawkins married on 29 December 1884 one Elizabeth Young, a native of Missouri who was born on 18 January 1864. Four years after their marriage, Emily Ragland signed the farm over to Oliver Hawkins. Here, he and his wife, Elizabeth, would make their home for the remainder of their lives.

In addition to farming, Oliver Hawkins was a first class carpenter, a trade at which he worked almost to the time of his death on 14 March 1937.

His wife, Elizabeth, died in Laclede County on 26 November 1897.
Oliver Hawkins remarried on 12 September 1901 Josie Bell Coonce, a native of Laclede County who was born on 3 April 1877. Josie Bell died on 29 December 1962. Oliver Hawkins had a total of seven children, four by his first wife and three by his second wife."
