Zella Blenn Babcock

Zella Blenn Babcock, 89, of Nortonville, KS passed away on May 23, 2004, at a Topeka, KS hospital.

She was born September 30, 1914, on a farm north of Nortonville, the daughter of Herman C. and Lenna Bond Babcock.

She graduated from Nortonville High School in 1933 and from Salem College in Salem, W.VA, in 1938 with a degree in homemaking and English. Miss Babcock worked for Salem College for three years and then taught high school near McConnelsville, Ohio, for a year. She returned to Nortonville in 1943 to be near her parents and took a teaching position at Winchester High School, where she taught until 1948. She taught in Logan from 1948 to 1955, and taught at Holton High School from 1955 until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of Seventh Day Baptist Church in Nortonville, where she served as a clerk for 28 years and as organist for 31 years, taught Sabbath School classes and worked with youth groups for many years.

Survivors include a brother, Paul Babcock, Shelton, WA; three sisters, Evelyn Weber, Asheville, N.C., Ruby August, Atchison, KS and June Johnson, Nortonville, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Osmond Babcock; and a sister, Vera McWilliams.

Funeral services were held May 26, 2004 at Seventh Day Baptist Church in Nortonville. Burial was in Nortonville Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Seventh Day Baptist Church. Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, O'Trimble Chapel in Nortonville, is in charge of arrangements.
