Former Welches resident Bette Jane Riley, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 19, in a Portland hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Hoodland Lutheran Church, 59151 E. Highway 26, Brightwood. Inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Bette was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Racine, Wis., to Einar and Ruby Olson. She was raised and educated in Wisconsin.

On Dec. 7, 1946, she married WILLIAM H. STARK in Wisconsin. They started a family in Racine, moving to Minnesota in 1956. They later divorced.

Bette moved to Oregon in 1971. She married EUGENE "Bud" RILEY on Dec. 20, 1972, in Gresham. They lived in Gresham until 1982, when they moved to Sandy. Bette and Bud moved to Welches in 1992.

Bette was a member of the Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, and the Sandy Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, serving as president. Bette was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crafts.

Bud preceded her in death in 1998.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Stark of Woodville, Wis.; son, Bruce Stark of Cape Coral, Fla.; brothers, George Olson of Apple Valley, Minn., and Winn Olson of Ripon, Wis.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sandy Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
