Byzantine Emperor. He was working as a tax collector when the Opsician army at Rhodes declared him Emperor following their rebellion in 715 AD. He was reportedly reluctant to accept the throne, but finally took power after the fall of Constantinople following a six month siege. Soon after becoming Emperor he replaced the image of the Sixth Ecumenical Synod, which had been removed by Phillippicus Bardanes and because of this action was afterwards known to history by the name "orthodox". His need for support against a feared Arab invasion led to him forging an alliance with the Bulgarian Khan Tervel in 716 AD with a treaty in which he ceded Byzantine territory in the Zagoria region in return for trade agreements. In 717 AD the capture of his son by the future Emperor, Leo III, forced his abdication and he joined the clergy, later becoming Bishop off Ephesus.
