Florence Barnes Dies Last Night
Funeral Sunday For Local Woman's Sister

Mrs. Florence Barnes, 83, a longtime resident of Elk City vicinity and the sister of Mrs. Lena Collins of this city, died last night at 11:40 p.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W.L. Lee of Caney. Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m., Sunday at the Graves Memorial chapel in Caney with the Rev. W.B. McKinney officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery at Elk City. Mrs. Barnes was born Florence Merritt Nov, 1, 1867 in Nemaka county, Kan., and at the age of 18 she moved with her parents to Elk City where she lived until nine years ago. Since that time she had been making her home with her children. She was united in marriage to James E. Barnes Sept. 3 1890 at Elk City and he preceded her in death, Oct. 29, 1935. Mrs. Barnes was a charter member of the Goldenrod club of Elk City and also a member of the Elk City Meihodist church. Surviving besides the daughter and sister mentioned, she leaves two other daughters, Mrs. Ralph Wagner, Caney, and Mrs. J. S. Shaffer of Fontana, Kan.; one son, Fred Barnes, Napa, Calif.; two other sisters, Mrs. Lillie Reece, Wetmore, and Mrs. Nettie Jerome of Horton; two brothers, Fred Merritt, Rogers, Ark., and Oscar Merritt of Elkhart; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
