"COALFIELD, Tenn., July 29.--Mrs. Mary Davis, died at her home on the Fair View [Fairview] pike Thursday morning, July 20, after an illness of several weeks. She was 85 years old. Surviving her are four children, Samuel L. Davis, Mrs. Charlotte E. Goddard, Mrs. Artelia Adkisson, Miss Ida B. Davis, all of Coalfield. Sixteen grandchildren, Miss Thresa [Theresa] M. Goddard, Hobart G. Davis, of Greensboro, N.C.; Mrs. Walter Jackson, of Kentucky; Mrs. John Cox, of North Carolina; Misses Blanche, Magrada, Ileen [Eileen] and Joanna Davis, Ellis Davis, Misses Bertie Adkisson, Glenna Adkisson, Helen Adkisson, Victor and Ralph Adkisson, Mrs. Wm. "She also had six great-grandchildren.
"Mrs. Davis was from one of the most prominent and well[-]known families of Morgan county. She was born in Virginia and came to Tennessee when very young.
"She was married to Thomas H. Davis in 1867,* thus uniting two of the leading families of the country.
"The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Eli Brown, assisted by Mr. Lige Wood, a lifelong friend of the family. Interment followed in the Davisc [Davis] emetery [cemetery]."
*1867 was evidently a typo for 1861 (the Morgan County Court lacks an official marriage record).
