John served as a Captain in the Civil War, Co A 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was Mayor of Americus in 1876, 1879-1892 1901-1902. Mayor John B. Felder stabbed Alderman Dr. Willis P. Burt, on Lamar near Jackson (Burt survived and ran against Felder in the December election and lost) He was also one of the founders of Americus' public schools.

Weekly Times Recorder, Sept 5, 1912, p. 1 gives the obituary of Capt. John B. Felder.(Paraphased) He served in the Sumter Light Guards at age 16 in the civil war. His wife was the former Lucy Taylor, daughter of S.K. Taylor besides the children listed here, others surviving included Thomas J Felder, John B Felder, Jr, and daughters Mrs. Logan Williamson of Atlanta and Miss Kate Felder. Five sisters survived, including Ms. W. K. Bell and Mrs W. J Thornton of Americus, Mrs. L. R. Ray and Mrs. T. J. Stoval both of Atlanta, and Mrs. Phil McKay of Kentucky.
