The prize was a gold medal and this makes the second medal he has won. This speaks well for Mr. Saunders and his many friends will be glad to learn of his success. I. W. Saunders Dies
After Short Illness

Few knew that I. W. Saunders, prominent resident of Davis for 40 years, had been ill when the word went out that he had passed away. His illness was short – his death a shock to his many friends.

About 9 o'clock Saturday night he was stricken with a heart attack and light stroke of paralysis. His condition became alarming, his daughters in Rio Grande valley of Texas were notified, and they hurried to his bedside, arriving Monday morning. Death ensued at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 1939.

Three years ago Mr. Saunders sustained a stroke and it is believed he never fully recovered from its effects.

Funeral services were held in the First Baptist church of Davis at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dr. W. Lee Rector of Ardmore conducting the service with the assistance of the local pastor, Rev. C. R. McClelland.

Pall bearers were: P. T. Francis, Ed Peterman, C. N. Dickson, A. J. Liles, J. H. Hutchin and O. J. Boyte.

Hutchins & Sons had charge of funeral arrangements. Burial was in Green Hill cemetery.

Ilis W. Saunders was born May 10, 1870, at Collinsville, Texas, where he spent his boyhood. On Nov. 13, 1895, he married Miss Sarah Tilley and they moved to Arkadelphia, Ark., where he taught two years in a commercial college. He resided in Shawnee, I.T., two years, coming to Davis in 1899 and spent the remainder of his life here, engaging in the following lines of business: Variety store, photography, picture show, and of late years was local distributer for oil companies. He was active and energetic in business matters and made a success of whatever he undertook.

Mr. Saunders was a member of the A.O.U.W., Modern Woodmen and Baptist church.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Saunders of Davis; two daughters, Mrs. Harris Cozby and Mrs. Oscar Polk, and two granddaughters, Mrs. Jack Nelson and Miss Dorothy Deane Polk, all of McAllen, Texas; two brothers, Will Saunders, Lewisville, Texas, and Harry Saunders, Denison, Texas; and two sisters, Mrs. Mecca Krebbs, Avery, Okla., and Mrs. Beulah Abbot, Amarillo, Texas.

A resident of our city for 40 years, Mr. Saunders held the esteem and confidence of the community. He was fine neighbor, a friend to all, and will be missed.

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harris Cozby, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Polk, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nelson and Mrs. Lon Polk, all of McAllen, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Robnett and Mrs. W.H. Phillips, Ardmore; Wilford Saunders and family and Mr. and Mrs. J.E.
