Addie Sell Hardwick Royal, 96, formerly of 617 Colonial Drive, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at the Cary Health and Rehab Center. Born October 26, 1906, in Bethel, NC, she was one of seven children born to the late Rev. Eli C. Sell and Annie Allen Sell. She moved to Wilmington in 1912 and became an employee of Western Union in 1921, where she remained until her 1971 retirement.
She was married to Jesse C. Hardwick on December 25, 1924, who preceded her in death in 1971. During her working career, and later in retirement, she was actively involved in many professional, civic, and volunteer organizations. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
Addie is survived by a daughter, Margaret McDougall of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a son, Jerry Hardwick of Fayetteville, NC; eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild.
Addie was dearly loved by her family and friends. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor, a strong work ethic, and a powerful will in the face of adversity. She relished entertaining her grandchildren with a seemingly bottomless reservoir of fascinating stories. She loved to laugh, shop, sew, make birdcalls, travel, cook fudge candy, watch soap operas, feed the squirrels, read the newspaper, and talk on the phone. She loved the color pink. Addie loved life and she lived it to its fullest.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
