Funeral services for Mrs. Leila Belle Westerlund, 73, who died early Friday morning at the Pryor Hospital, following an illness of some duration, were held at the home on Center Street Saturday morning, with the Rev. J. E. Rawlinson pastor of the First Baptist Church, in charge, assisted by the Rev. M. L. Banister, of Oxford, N. C. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, S. C.
Mrs. Westerlund was a daughter of Mr. Benjamin Pickens Gregory and Mrs. Elmira Smith Gregory, bith are deceased , and was a native of the Baton Rouge community.
Mrs. Westerlund was twice married, first to Mr. Gill Cornwell. From this union threre were three children. Surviving this union are Miss Maggie Mae Cornwell and Curtis P. Cornwell, both of Chester. Lieut, Zemp Cornwell died suddenly of a heart attack at Pensacola, Fla., a few weeks ago. At the time of his death he was an instructor in aviation at Pensacola, and was a veteran naval flyer.
Some years following Mr. Cornwell's death she was married to the late Mr. Leja F. Westerlund, of Rock Hill. From this union two children survive, Mr. Augustus Earl Westerlund, of Union, and Mrs. John Jeter Wade, of York; also so a number of grand-children.
Mrs. Westerlund was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, and regular in attendance and active in her support of all branches of the work until loss of health interfered. She was kind and thoughtful as a neighbor, loving and sympathetic in the home and to all about her; and her going, for those dependent upon her, and the recipients of her loving kindness and tender ministrations, leaves a place that can never be filled.
