Kay Jean Asplund, 66, beloved, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at her home in Brainerd on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004. Kay was born on Oct. 5, 1937, in Cloquet, Minn., to Harlan and Krevia (Reiter) Gilchrist. She married Frank Asplund in Cloquet on Jan. 29, 1954. They settled in Brainerd in 1961. Kay was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and First Lutheran Church.

Kay is survived by Frank, her husband of 50 years, a daughter Sunnie (Scott) Estey of Nisswa, sons Jon (Sue) Asplund of St. Cloud, Paul Asplund of Los Angeles, and Keith (Paula) Asplund of St. Cloud, grandchildren Reed, Jeremy, CJ, Adrienne, Zachary, Nicholas, Samantha, Kelsey and Jeremy; brothers Boyd (Lorraine) Gilchrist of Mandan, N.D., Brian (Karen) Gilchrist of Cloquet, and Bruce (Jo) Gilchrist of Cloquet.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Jack.

Kay was president and CEO of Minnesota Chek-Rite Inc., until health problems forced her retirement.

The name Kay is said to mean genuine and that is exactly what she was. There were no pretenses in her life. She accepted both joys and sorrows of life head to head, and made the best she could from either one. She had a loving warm heart for her friends and especially for her family. She had a special love for children, babies to young adults. She opened her home several times to young adults, working with them to get a new start in life. None of them ever left her home without knowing they were worthwhile people and knew someone cared about them.

In 1986, Kay brought notes and information from Minneapolis Southwest High School concerning a program for graduating seniors. Together with friends Rosemary Potvin and Jane Gunsbury, they presented the program to the Brainerd school board. The board endorsed it, the community backed it and it was named "Grad Blast." The success of Grad Blast has been a constant joy for Kay.

Special thanks to her friends who found time to visit in these last years. Kay lived her life in genuine loving and giving. She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Andy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Camp Ripley. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and the hour before services Saturday at the church.
