Obituary - Visalia Times Delta

Born in Granville, North Dakota on September 11, 1924 to Nellie May and Myron Allen, the third of four children: Annabelle Allen, Charles Hollis Allen and Evelyn Allen Mehlhaff - all of whom preceded her in death. She passed away in McKinney, Texas on September 19, 2009. Arlyss was raised on a grain-producing farm in North Dakota and graduated from Minot State Teachers College. She took a job at Boeing in Seattle, Washington during WWII followed by a move to Visalia in 1946 where she began her teaching career. In Visalia she met and married William Sherman Stump in 1947. They were married for 57 years until Bill's death in October 2004. Their son, Brian William, was born in late 1951 and she turned her attention to raising a family. She returned to full-time teaching by completing her Bachelor's degree from Fresno State University and a Master's degree from the University of San Francisco in 1979 with a focus on the development of reading skills in young students. Arlyss co-authored a book in 1980 entitled, "Your Child Can Read Better." A teaching career in the Visalia Unified School District took her to numerous elementary schools and culminated with her being awarded the 1992 Teacher of the Year Award just prior to retirement. Arlyss was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Visalia and later Community Presbyterian Church in Three Rivers, California. She was an active member of the Theta Tau Theta Sorority, the California Retired Teachers Association and the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Survivors include son Brian and his wife Ann Stump of McKinney, Texas; grandson Kevin William and wife Alisha along with great-grandson Sawyer William of Plano, Texas; and granddaughter Julia Morrison and husband David with great-granddaughter Ava Claire of Richardson, Texas.
