Obituary - Visalia Times Delta

Lillian B. Arena Smith went to rest in the arms of the Lord on September 24, 2009. Lillian was born on May 20, 1919 to Anna Mae and Walter Hunter in Green Bay Wisconsin. She was raised in Santa Monica, Ca. where she met and married Anthony (Tony) Arena. They moved their two daughters to Visalia in 1950. Lillian was a 60 year member of St. Mary's Catholic Church loyally serving the Alter and Rosary Society, George McCann's Mother's club, and the Infant of Prague. She was also one of the sweet pink ladies of the Kaweah Delta Hospital Guild. Lillian was a talented golfer and a champion duplicate bridge player. As a gifted homemaker she made delicious candy and pastries, knitted and crocheted with the experts, and was a beautiful seamstress. All of this made her a gracious hostess who warmly welcomed people into her home. Big band music and oil painting gave her great pleasure. Lillian's only weakness was her passion for all things chocolate. This chocoholic was not always willing to share. After the death of Tony Arena in 1984, Lillian met, fell in love with and married Elmer T. Smith of Kingsburg, Ca. They lived on Kings River Golf Course for twenty-two years. Lillian made many new friends and traveled around the world at Elmer's side. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents Anna Mae and Walter Hunter, five brothers and sisters, Tony Arena and her great granddaughter Heather Nugent. She is survived by her husband Elmer Smith and his three daughters, Janna, Barbara and Carol, Lillian's children Joanna Nugent and husband Art, Sharon Rice and husband Wayne, grandchildren Skip Nugent, Mary Kay Akins and husband Michael, Kevin Nugent, Lisa Ingham and husband Robert, Tony Rice and wife Joanne, great grandchildren Courtney Nugent, Brett Akins, Katie Akins, Justin Nugent and wife Stephanie, Kelsey Nugent, Paige Ingham, Anthony Rice, and Will Rice, great-great grandchildren Maddox, Ava and Joaquin Nugent. Our family would like to thank the staff at Delta Nursing of Visalia for their dedicated care. A very special thanks to Dr. Stephen Meis who supported the family and lovingly cared for Lillian. Viewing will be held at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel on Sunday, September 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mass will be said at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday, September 28th at 1:30 p.m. and private burial at the Visalia Cemetery Tuesday September 29th. The family requests that donations be made to "Happy Hearts" Children's Hospital Central California in Loving memory of Heather Nugent sent in care of Best Buy Market Visalia or Hospice of Tulare County who took exceptional care of Lillian. Condolences .may be emailed to [email protected]
