Byzantine Emperor. He was the son of a Patricius and was sent into exile in Kephalonia by the Emperor Tiberios III for having a dream that he was to become Emperor. Tiberios was later deposed by the returning Emperor Justinian II and in 711 AD supporters of the exiled Bardanes murdered Justinian and raised him to the imperial throne. A year after coming to power he declared his support for the doctrine of monothelitism, which states that Christ had only one will, and because of this, Pope Constantine declared him a heretic and refused to recognize his rule. He developed a reputation for learning and fought successful wars against the Armenians and Bulgarians. However, in 713 AD Antioch fell to the Arabs and within a month he was deposed and sent into exile by Anastasius II. He died in exile in January of the following year.
