Derald Hayden Rust was born August 14, 1942 in Solo, Missouri, the son of William Ray and Zella Naomi (Erwin) Rust. He passed away June 17, 2009, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 66 years,10 months and 3 days.
Derald grew up in the Cabool, Missouri, area with his two sisters, Karen Rust and Renee Rust Pearson.
He accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized at the Christian Church on February 5, 1958.
Derald attended school in Cabool, graduating in 1960.
He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 1, 1960. After returning from basic training, he married LaDonna Supancic, and a daughter, Felicia Lynn, was born in March 1961. Felicia died at the age of four months from a congenital heart defect. He and LaDonna divorced in 1965.
Derald met his "Baby Duck" in September of 1967 while serving as a recruiter in Springfield, Missouri. He proposed to Arula Kaighin one week after they met, and they were married three months later on December 30, 1967 at Drury Stone Chapel.
Their first daughter, Shawna Marie, was born on January 26, 1969 in Springfield. While stationed in the Oakland area, their second daughter, Marci Rae, was born on August 11, 1972 in Santa Clara, California.
Derald's pride and joy were his four grandchildren, Skylar and Dylan Cunningham and Emma and Connor Davis. They spent many happy hours together reading books, playing games and going on adventures.
During Derald's 22 years in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Diodon, the USS Nautilus, the USS Mahomen County, the USS Ruchamkin, the USS Sufflok County, the USS Lipan, the USS Preble, the USS Independence, and the USS Nashville. He was also stationed at the U.S. Navy Recruiting Branch Station in Springfield; the 1200 PSI Mobile Training Team of the Pacific Fleet out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and the Navy Recruiting District Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. He received many awards, commendations and medals, and completed 7,040 hours of specialized training.
Derald's highest advancement as an enlisted man was to Master Chief Petty Office (E-9). He turned down the advancement to fulfill one of his dreams, to become an officer. He accepted his commission as a Chief Warrant Officer (W-2) in April of 1976. He attained W-3 before he retired.
After his retirement in September 1, 1982, Derald and his family settled in Lexington, Nebraska. He returned to school at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and obtained his bachelor of science degree in education. He taught secondary science in Brule, Nebraska; Axtell NE Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, Nebraska; and Shenandoah, Iowa, public school systems over a 17-year period. He retired in 2002, but continued to substitute teach for several more years.
In October 2008 Derald was diagnosed with lung cancer. He fought hard to overcome the cancer and was declared cancer-free in March 2009. Unfortunately, it became evident that the treatments had damaged his heart. He passed away on Wednesday, June 17.
Derald was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Felicia Lynn Rust; and a sister, Gail Rae Rust.
Survivors include his wife, Arula of Shenandoah, Iowa; two daughters, Shawna Rust of Cabool and Marci Davis and husband Scott of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Skyler Cunningham, Dylan Cunningham, Emma Davis and Connor Davis; two sisters, Karen Rust of Cabool and Renee Pearson and husband Randy of Cabool; various nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as numerous classmates and friends. He will be missed by all.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Cabool Christian Church. Graveside services with full military honors were at Oakdale Cemetery near Solo, Missouri.
