Donald G. "Pop" Eschenbacher, age 83, resident of Baxter, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 19, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Donald was born on October 6, 1932 in Brainerd, the son of Walter L. and Martha Luttmann Eschenbacher. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1950. Served in the U.S. Army 1953-1955 during the Korean Conflict. On October 22, 1955 he was united in marriage to Gladys A. Keyso, his beloved wife of 60 years.

Donald lived all his life in Brainerd/Baxter area. He was employed for 37 1/2 years at Potlatch. He was active in many aspects of the community such as: Co-Founder and Manager of Northwest Paper Credit Union, now known as Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union, for over 10 years; State Board of Directors Minn. Credit Union; Former Baxter Council Member; Scout Master of Baxter Troop #36; Citizen Advisory Committee member for District #181; past treasurer of Zion Lutheran Church; past treasurer of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, of which he is a charter member; past president of Lowell School PTA; many-year Sunday School teacher and superintendent; member of Nisswa American Legion; foreign student parent to daughter Dr. Lila Gomez de Banuelos of Asuncion, Paraguay; Crow Wing County Land and Timber Committee; steering committee for United Way; outstanding Brainerd Education Association lay person in education district #181.

Don loved life and most of all his wife and family. He loved to travel, which he and Gladi did much of, starting when they were raising their family. Most of all he loved time spent with his grandchildren at their lake summer residence - tracking all eight plus many of their friends, watching them ride cycle, 4 wheeler, canoe, jet ski, tubing, fishing off his beloved pontoon "never could catch bass"-and most fun was teaching 53 young people to water ski, of which he was quite good at and when he and one of the grandchildren would double ski, his world was complete. He enjoyed visiting their work and colleges, just spending time around the fireplace talking, he was a great listener or fixing their cars if need be. He loved working with his hands, such as he and Gladi building their own home. He loved to sing, with his highlight being singing at his daughters' weddings. He tried to never miss an occasion to be with his families. The grandchildren were his best friends, becoming a great grandfather was another beautiful part of his world. He flew his grandchildren to Panama City Beach, Myrtle Beach whenever they were vacationing, he took pride in all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was also proud to be Godparent to 15 children.

Survivors include his wife, Gladi; his children, Donald K. (Bonita) Eschenbacher, Deanndra Z. Eschenbacher-Hondl (Kevin), Darbie Z. Eschenbacher; and Dr. Lila (Domingo) Gomez de Banuelos; grandchildren, Royce L. Hondl, Blake A. Hondl, Alex R. Hondl, Kelsey A. Hunter (Carl), Martha K. Fasteland, Mickenzie E. Fasteland, Amanda J. Craven (Luke), Kristin M. Griffith (Pastor David); great-grandchildren, Jack, Maxwell, Cecilia, Patience, Victoria, Alayna, Calvin, Charles, Ruth, Daniel, and Hannah.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Martha, sisters, Violet and Colleen; his baby brother, and great-granddaughter Samantha Joy Craven.

Services will be held 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 10:30 at the church. Arrangements are with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.
