Philetus served as a Sergeant with the state of CT during the Revolutionary War (4/16/1775-9/3/1783)*. He later served as a General during the War of 1812 (6/18/1812-2/18/1815).

He was member of the New York State Senate and acting Lt. Governor of NY in 1817.

He was originally buried at the Pioneer Cemetery at Phelps, NY. In 1905, his granddaughter moved his remains and those of other family members to the Webster Rural Cemetery in Webster, NY.

*Philetus Swift does not appear in the enlisted rolls of Colonel Samuel Elmore's Battalion Regiment of Captain Lathrop Allen Company. Only John Swift appears as a PVT. enlisted Aug. 25 1776 and Jan 13-15 1777. Philetus would have only been 13 years old in 1776.

First to Electa Goodrich (m. 4 Apr 1786, Sharon, CT)
Second to Sally Deane (d. 1823)
Third to Fawnia Cole (m. 1823)

Philetus Swift married his deceased nephew, Asa Ransom Swift's widow, Fawnia in 1823 (with the blessing of his previous wife, Sally Deane, who had been ill and died in 1823). Fawnia and Philetus Swift had one daughter, Electra Jane Swift (b. 1825) before he died in 1828.

Note: Some records indicate that Gen. Swift was originally buried at the Pioneer Cemetery at Phelps, N.Y. and that in the early 1900s, his granddaughter had his remains reinterred in the Webster Rural Cemetery in Webster, N.Y. Marker remains at Pioneer. There is also a marker at Webster Rural where his remains are now interred.
