Isaac was father of 8 children (Elizabeth (Smalley) Lowry,Mary Ann Smalley, William Henry Smalley, Harriet (Smalley) Combs, John Smalley, Isaac M. Smalley, Jr., Jessee Richard Smalley, and Malissa Jane (Smalley) Gibson). Isaac married Emma Jane Mathews on 7 Nov 1833 in Ohio (See Family Link below). Isaac was son of John Pittenger Smalley, Sr.(1777-1853) and Elizabeth Bradfield (1787-1858). Isaac served as a Captain in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Note: Previously, it was stated here that there was some confusion about whether Isaac was a captain or private during the Civil War. Records indicating 'private' are for his son, Isaac, Jr., who served in the same unit as his brothers John, William H., and Jessee R. All served in Company D, 2nd MO Cavalry (Merrill's Horse). Before these brothers entered service, their father, Isaac Sr., helped organize Company C, 7th MO State Militia and was named captain of that unit. He served in that capacity from Oct. 1861 to Mar. 1862 and was not with any other military unit during the remainder of the war.
