John Murphy was born to Rev. Albert Gallatin and Susannah Riddle Slagle when they lived in the Deyton Bend community of Yancey County, NC, just before the War Between the States. He moved to Macon County where his brother David had moved his family, and there he met and married Miss Sarah Caroline "Callie" Justice. Their wedding took place on August 22, 1888 in Franklin.

John Murphy and Callie soon moved to nearby Swain County where their first child Nola was born in 1890. She married Andrew Jackson DeHart when she grew up. Six other children followed: Walter Butler who married Amanda Lavada Simonds; Sine Della who married Jacob Richard Wikle; John berlin who married Gertrude Ann Hambly; Rose Marie who married Waymouth Easley first, then John Peters Canfield; Richmond Pearson, and Dallas McKinley Slagle.

John Murphy, a farmer, died of the flu and pneumonia the same year as his brother David, but Callie did not die until 1951 while living in Ponoma, Los Angeles County, CA where their daughter Rose Marie Canfield lived.
