Forrest L Dempsey

Forrest Lee Dempsey, (Formoso, Kansas), son of Franklin and Ethel (Sturtevant) Dempsey, was born August 4, 1920, on the family farm in section 36 of Washington Township, Jewell County, Kansas, and died July 24, 2009, at the Republic County Hospital Long-term Care, Belleville, Kansas, at the age of 88 years. He was the 7th child born into his family.
In October 1942, Forrest was inducted into the army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served for 3½ years in the 42nd tank Battalion, 11 armor division, of Patton's third Army, and received his discharge January 13, 1946. This is the reason Forrest always considered 13 his lucky number.
After his discharge from the army, Forrest met Vera Alexander and on April 24, 1946, they were was married at the home of Vera's parents. Their first home was south of Formoso, where Forrest's grandparents Tom and Savilla Sturtevant had lived.
To this union 4 children were born. After Renita and Renee were born, they moved to Formoso where they lived their remaining years.
Forrest worked as a custodian for the Formoso Grade School, during the 1960's and then Mankato High School from 1969 until retirement in 1980's. He was a hard worker and took pride in his work, making sure the school looked neat and clean.
Forrest was a farmer and harvested wheat. His main loves were for animals and being creative with wood, and making Christmas decorations, which he would share with his family and gave away to people. He never wanted any money for them – that would take away his enjoyment in giving. Forrest had a creative mind; he was able to use whatever he had available.
The family grew up with a variety of animals to play with and also were used for food. After retiring Forrest continued his love for animals.
Forrest could be seen clearing off the snow on the road and driveways for his neighbors. For many years he served as a voluntary Fireman and Township trustee.
He always enjoyed helping others and also visiting with them. One popular place to meet was at his sister's, Madeline's café. There would be plenty of laughter and men made "gossip" on Saturday mornings. A good joke made his day!
With all the health problems he endured, Forrest would always say, "you just have to have faith". When he wasn't attending church at Montrose, he enjoyed listing to the pastors on TV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vera; siblings - John, LaVerne, Lyle (Bud), Frank Marcelle (Marr), Madeline Sills, Ivalee Huffman, Maxine Cordel Beale; two infant boys; and one girl.
Forrest is survived by his son – Dan and wife, Lynn Dempsey of Formoso, Kansas; three daughters – Kay and husband Rodney Horn of Woodridge, Illinois, Renita and husband Mark Williams of Bourbonnaise, Illinois, and Renee and husband, Marshall Holmes of Hesston, Kansas; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and a sister –in-law, Esther Dempsey, 2nd wife of Lyle (Bud); and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service for Forrest L. Dempsey was held Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Dan Dempsey officiating. Casket bearers and military honors were provided by the United States Army Honor Guard, Ft. Riley, Kansas. Interment followed the service in the cemetery, beside his wife, Vera. The family received friends at the Melby Mortuary, Monday, July 27, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will have a time for fellowship and sharing.,after the service at the Formoso Community Center, Formoso, Kansas. The family also would suggest memorials in lieu of flowers, a local and veterans charity will be named at a later date. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements
