Civil Rights Figure. She was the vice principal for girls of Little Rock Central High School from 1954 to 1969. She had taught english in Fort Smith and Little Rock before becoming vice principal. She had bachelor and master degrees in education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and she was a phi beta kappa member. During the first year of desegregation, from 1957 to 1958, she assisted the six black female students of the group known as the Little Rock Nine. During that school year, she kept a diary of events. Some years later, using the diary notes, she wrote a book, "Crisis at Central High". From the draft of that book a TV docudrama of the same name was produced in which Joanne Woodward portrayed her.
