She was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Springfield, the daughter of Paul and Mary Foster Handley. She married George Stoffel on March 23, 1946; he preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, George D. Stoffel; a sister, Jean; and a brother, Paul.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Ray Fraser) Barlick of San Jose, Calif.; a granddaughter, Terry (Mathew) Wilson of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; two great-grandsons, Ryan and Troy Wilson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elna was a lifelong resident of Springfield.
She was a homemaker and formerly worked at Sangamo Electric.
She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, where she served as a church deaconess. She was a graduate of Lanphier High School, where she was a member of the tumbling team and the National Honor Society. Elna enjoyed fishing, playing Pinochle, gardening, Polka music, and collecting mice.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brent Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Third Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
