Services Held for Pioneer Minister
Funeral services for Reverend Edward J. Jameson, 87, pioneer state minister, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church. He died Friday, April 24, 1964, in a Muskogee hospital.
Born near Atlanta, Georgia, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Baptist University in Macon, Georgia in 1908 and his ABD Degree from South Baptist Seminary in Georgia in 1911.
Upon receiving his divinity degree, he came to Okemah in 1911 where he pastored the First Baptist Church and also at Weleetka and Haileyville. In 1916 he came to Wagoner as pastor of the First Baptist Church and remained eight years. He then went to Chelsea for five years as pastor there then returned to Wagoner. After he was semi-retired he wrote a book, “The Well Balanced Man.”
Reverend John Brill of Tahlequah and Reverend Glen Smith, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the services.
Survivors are one son, Edward Jameson of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Connor and Mrs. Wilma Capehart, both of Tulsa; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Hersman Funeral Home of Wagoner.
Active pallbearers were John Copeland, H.H. Coats, Earl Smith, Foe Vivion, Alan Hicks and O.B. Nichols.
Honorary pallbearers included Frank Allison, Sr., Dr. H.H. Deatherage, C.J. Gilmore, Albert Norman, W.D. Rogers and J. Lee Stephens.
