Youngest of two daughters of James Woodall Johnston and Sarah Sophia Harry. She was a descendant of Martin Allen of the Old 300 thru her father. His mother was Elizabeth Miles Allen, granddaughter of Martin Allen who came to Texas in 1822. Nancy's mother, Sophia, was a granddaughter of William Pryor who also came to Texas about 1822. Both received thier league and labor from Stephen F Austin.

Nancy married Leon Ernest Tubbs in Colorado Co, TX in 1892. They were the parents of 15 children, 11 who lived to be adults.
