Lieutenant Maxwell Keyes, Killed by Filipinos Last November, Buried at Arlington
Lieutenant Maxwell Keyes, Third United States Infantry who was killed in action with the Filipinos at Ildefonso, Luzon, Philippine Islands on November 24 last was buried at Arlington National Cemetery at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A guard of honor was detailed from the Third Cavalry stationed at Fort Myer and with a last volley from the firing squad the remains were lowered into the ground while the bugler sounded taps. Quite a large number of Army officers and others who had known the young officer intimately attended the interment. The pallbearers who acted in an honorary capacity were: Brigadier General A. Mills and Lieutenant Colonel T. Norvell, United States Army, retired; Lieutenant C.A. Hedekin, Lieutenant F.J. Koester, Lieutenant E.L. Phillips and Lieutenant R.R. Wallach, Third United States Cavalry.

Lieutenant Keyes was born in Oklahoma, but was appointed to a Second Lieutenancy in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) under Colonel Wood from Texas. Later he was promoted to First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the regiment and served creditably during the Santiago Campaign July 1898. In June last he was appointed Second Lieutenant of the Third Regular Infantry and was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco until August 16 when the regiment was ordered to the Philippines. He had an excellent record both as a soldier and officer.
