Last child born to Dietrich Hadeler and Maria Damann, who immigrated in 1868. Henry's three older siblings were born in Germany, but Henry was born in Missouri. The Hadeler name ended up with variations amongst their children: Hadler and Hatler.

Henry's mother died a year after his birth, and his father went to Canada sometime after. Henry went to live with Herman and Adelheid Heidt. He can be found in their household in the 1880 Salem, Perry, Missouri census.
