Mary Frances Edwards was born January 27, 1831 in Kentucky and was married September 7, 1851 to Lane Slane. To their union were born seven children, four boys and three girls, one boy dying in infancy, the others living except one son, William who died in 1910. Those surviving are Mrs. W. H. Schlichter, Mrs. H. Shannon, Mrs. Mary Fairchild, and Nelson Slane all living in Coffey county and John Slane of Cornwallis, Oregon. Mrs. Slane was taken sick January 31st with grip altho she had bee in poor health for some time. She died February 13, 1914 at 2:30 a.m. Everything possible, was done for her but to no avail. All the children were present at the hour of death except John, who could not come. The Slanes lived in Indiana for some time and came to Coffey county thirty-five years ago. Mrs. Slane was an active member of the Baptist church for many years until failing health prevented active church work. The funeral was held at the home on Hudson street Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. C. L. Hovgard of the Methodist church and there was a large attendance.
