OBITUARY - ABILENE REPORTER

Thurston A. Burks, 89, died Thursday, September 17, 2009, at a local medical center. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Rev. Ricky Rister officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Thurston was born December 26, 1919 in Anson, Texas, where he was raised and attended school. He married Henrietta Scales in Ballinger May 18, 1940 and they moved to Abilene in 1951. Thurston worked as a paint contractor for 45 years and worked for Abilene Mobile Homes for twenty years before retiring. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors, farming and working with his hands. He loved having his family around.

Thurston was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years on December 28, 2005; three sisters; and five brothers.

Survivors include two sons, Alvis Gordon Burks of Lake Coleman, TX and Jimmy Earl Burks and wife, Debbie of Abilene; three daughters, Ann Shirley Sartor and husband, Jerry of Abilene, Brenda Sue Almendarez and husband, Charles of Marshall, TX, and Glenda Lou Burks of Abilene; eleven grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
