Joseph Levi Strickland, eldest son of Henry Lee and Edna E. Strickland, was born near Osceola, Missouri, on July 7, 1879, and passed away at the memorial hospital at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, on September 5, 1950, at the age of 71 years, one month, and 28 days. When he was about a year old, he came with his parents to Kansas, and they made thier home in the Mingona community. He was married on March 1, 1899, to Ellen E. Doles. To this union were born two daughters, Opal and Gladys.

For a number of years he was a successful farmer west of Medicine Lodge, and in 1918 he moved with his family to Medicine Lodge and was engaged in the garage business. Later, he was a Ford dealer in partnership with his son-in-law, Rolland Hewitt who preceded him in death. He was also employed by the Sprout Motor Company, making a total of 30 years spent in the garage business.

Two years ago his health began to fail him and he retired. He gradually became weaker until he was hospitalized three weeks ago. He was a member of the Church of God, Delta Masonic order and the Oddfellow Lodge of Medicine Lodge.

He was a devoted husband and loving father and was respected and loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his faithful wife, Ellen, and two daughters, Mrs. John Kness and Mrs. Adrian Ward, all of Medicine Lodge; three grandchildren, Hugh Hill of Medicine Lodge, Jean Burris of Lyons, and Joyce Roberson of Hutchinson; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Bert and Frank Strickland of Wendell, Idaho, Tom of Naples,Idaho; Troy of Holbrook, Arizona; and Fred of Sawyer; three sisters, Mrs. Lee Nurse of Medicine Lodge; Mrs. Herschel Shriver of Lake City; and Mrs. Will Shriver of Holyrood and many other relatives and friends.
