Alice A. Kleven, 88, Brainerd, entered into the arms of the Lord on Friday, April 25, 2008, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. She was born on May 1, 1919, to Burt and Ella (Johnson) Shannon in St. Paul and lived there for a time until her family moved to a farm in Maple Ridge. When her mother died at a young age, Alice at age 13 had to take over the cooking and cleaning as the farm had a large crew of farmhands. She married Kermit Kleven on Oct. 23, 1937, and they raised five children. They moved to the Brainerd area in 1949 and resided here until their deaths. Alice worked as a waitress and bartender, most recently at the Log Cabin in Brainerd. She was a member of the Moose Club and First Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
She is survived by one daughter, Marie (Wayne) Rakow, Fort Ripley; one son, Clyde (Kathryn) Kleven, Bull Head City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Craig, Faye, Jana, Jamie, Jeffry, Dawn, Margo and Jaime; eight great-grandchildren; and two nephews and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kermit; three daughters, Elouise, Diane and Sharon; three grandchildren; and a sister and brother.
We love you and will miss you dearly, Mom and Grandma.
Services will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Kristen Oltmann officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Brainerd. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd and on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
