Richard died in 1824, at 38 years of age, of an unremembered cause. This does not mean that Richard's wife, Rachel Cotton (1785-?) remarried. She was a year older than Richard. Her grave has not yet been located. She may have remarried or moved away from Salt Creek Township, to live with a grown child.

Rachel Cotton Haley was one of eleven children of John Cotton (1748-1818) and Mary Ricketts (1755-1833), both Marylanders, who were married June 2, 1774, probably in Anne Arundel County, MD.

Richard and Rachel Haley were married on April 16, 1807. They were the parents of Lucinda Haley (1818-1893) who was only six when her father died.
