She was the daughter of Dr. Samuel B. Abell and Hettie Behethlen (Jeffries) Simms.

Channie was baptized April 17, 1847, at St. Theresa Church, Meade County, Kentucky. Behethelen Jeffries, her grandmother was her godmother.

Three of Channie's siblings were also baptized at St. Theresa's: 1) Lucinda Abel (sic), born: July 9, 1849, baptized on October 7, 1849, sponsor: Sally Ann Cunningham; 2) Francis Jeffers (sic) Abell, born: Nov. 18, 1851, baptized: July 4, 1852, sponsor Ann Cunningham; and Jesse Abell, a daughter, born: (not given), baptized: April 1, 1854.

Channie was the wife of John Dallas Simms. They married Nov 14 1865 in Holy Name of Mary Church, Calvary, Marion Co., Kentucky

Their children were: Sam A Simms, Hettie Simms, Jessie M Simms, Joseph Wathen Simms, John Simms, Richard Robert Simms and Mary E Simms.


Channie died at the Corondolet Hotel an Corondolet Street in New Orleans, Louisiana and shares a tombstone with husband and Emma Simms.

Mrs. Channie Simms, beloved wife of Mr. J. D. Simms , died in New Orleans last Sunday morning October 20, 1904 after a long illness of consumption. Her remains arrived in Lebanon last Tuesday and were carried to Mr. Simms' home near this city where the were viewed for the last time by hundreds of friends of the deceased' family. On Wednesday morning funeral services were conducted at St. Augustine's church in the presence of a large congregation by Rev. J. A. Hogarty, after which interment was held in St. Augustine's cemetery.

Before marriage Mrs. Simms was Miss Channie Abell and her parents lived near Calvary [not while she was living]. Her marriage to Mr. Simms was blessed with a large family of children, seven of whom survive her, namely, James, Sam, Joseph, John, Robert,Bessie, and Mrs, Jessie Abell of Missouri. One sister Mrs. Lucy Beard [should be Board] of Owensboro and one brother Frank Abel (sic) of Missouri, also survive her. At her death Mrs Simms was 56 years of age.

Deceased was a most estimable lady and was loved by all who knew her. By her husband and children she was almost idolized and most worth of their love was she. She was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church and died fortified by its Sacraments. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of a long list of friends.
