Janet LaVonne Thias was born on August 10, 1933 in Waterville, IA, the daughter of Clarence Oscar and Doris Loretta (Davis) Svebakken. She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. Janet graduated from Waterville High School in 1951, where she played basketball and made two trips to the state tournament with her team. Following school, she moved to Waterloo, IA, where she worked as a transcriptionist at Allen Memorial Hospital. She returned to northeast Iowa where on September 19, 1953 she married Eugene Wesley Thias at the Old West Paint Creek Church. Janet and Gene farmed together for many years in the "Bigfoot" area near Rossville. During this time she also spent 35 years working for Capco Products. The past eight winters, Janet and Gene have enjoyed spending time in Alamo, TX, where they regularly connected with many of their local friends.

Janet loved the farming life and spending time outdoors. She enjoyed hunting mushrooms and deer, Sunday outings on the Mississippi River with family and friends, and had a passion for fishing. She was an accomplished seamstress and did many crocheting and quilting projects. Following the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team and playing cards were other favorite pastimes. Janet was a member of the Bigfoot Study Club, and since her marriage, Rossville Presbyterian Church.
