Mordica Gilbert was born September 5, 1824, in North Carolina, a son of Joel and Lydia (Morgan) Gilbert. He was raised and educated in Henry Co., IN, and resided with his parents until manhood.
In 1845, Mordica married Martha Bundy, born April 16, 1828, a native of Henry Co., IN. They had a family of five children: Abel b. 1846; Rachel b. 1849; Esther b. 1852 (W. P. Binford) of Hancock Co., IN; Jeptha b. 1856; and Wilson b. 1859/d. 1863. Martha died on March 7, 1863.
He remarried, in 1864, to Mary Moore, and they had two children: (twins) Alfred b. 1867 and Albert b. 1867 d. 1868. Mary died on March 14, 1880.
In 1881, Mordica married, for a third time, to Catherine Gilbert, the daughter of Jacob Elliott and the widow of Thomas Gilbert. Catherine was born, in Wayne Co., IN, in 1821. She had three children by her first marriage: Jonathan N.; Oliver; and Anna (N. A. Moore).
Politically, Mordica was a Republican. He, his wives, and children were members of the Society of Friends.
