Ernest was born in Sunapee, New Hampshire to Thomas B. & Mehitable (Kidder) Abbott. He married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Clement) in 1863. To this union, two children, a son (Howard) and a daughter (Helen) were born. Following Lizzie's passing in 1921, Ernest would eventually remarry to Margaret (O'Day) Abbott.
After retiring from a long and successful career as proprietor of a beverage bottling company, Ernest Abbott began working for the U.S. Postal Office. He would become Postmaster of Derry, New Hampshire.
