A blacksmith shop was a necessity during the period of time when mules, wagons, horses and buggies were the order of the day. Dyas, Georgia was fortunate in having one of the best shops. This was operated by George Baggarly and his son, Homer Baggarly. Putting shoes on mules was big business as there were many mules in this area. There was a lot of work involved in keeping wagons in running shape, sharpening plow points, scrapes and the many other things necessary in keeping horse or mule drawn equipment operating. In time the blacksmith shop added a gristmill and did a good business making corn meal.
